RIVER LEVELS

The climate changes predicted for Wales will create more river flooding.

There will be

  • more rain in the winter. This results in the ground becoming saturated.
  • heavier rain in the winter. This does not soak into the ground so easily.
  • more drought in the summer. This, with higher temperatures, will bake the soil.

this will result in:

  • increased rainfall ‘run off’ as ‘overland flow’
    • rain water falling on valley sides reaching rivers more quickly by flowing over the surface
    • the level of rivers rising quickly
    • a higher chance that rivers will overflow banks and flood.
