Survey rejects the idea of imposing a congestion charge on motorists to fund transport system improvements
Don't charge motorists driving into Cardiff - that's the message to councillors from Echo readers.
54% of those responding to our survey opposed the idea with
43 % backing fees to help pay for hundreds of millions of pounds in transport improvements for our growing capital.
But there was support for the idea among those under 35, with the 35-44 age group the most opposed to charges.
61% of Echo readers backed the idea of making St Mary Street traffic-free. Coun. Morgan said: 'This council already has plans to remove private cars from St Mary Street to provide a more pleasant environment and improve air quality. 'It is likely to remain an important bus and taxi route.'
Around 200 buses an hour use St Mary Street.
There was strong support for bus lanes with a 71% positive vote
More frequent services,cheaper fares and reliable time-keeping were the top priorities needed to persuade people to use public transport.
