MEDIUM HEP SCHEMES
The older schemes were developed for industrial use.
Up to March 2000, another 14 projects have been developed with NFFO Contracts [Non Fossil Fuel Obligation – grants to encourage electricity generation from renewable resources]

- The dam was built in the early 1970s
- H E P was not developed because the cost of connecting this site to the electricity grid was too high.
- A NFFO contract was awarded in the 1990s to develop HEP.
- The new HEP station was built in 1996. To minimise the scheme's environmental impact, all connections to the electricity network were placed underground.
- The scheme generates enough electricity to meet the average needs of about 11,500 homes.
- The claim is that 'this equates to annual savings in emissions of more than 28,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide, 384 tonnes of sulphur dioxide and 130 tonnes of oxides of nitrogen, when compared with the equivalent power output from a typical coal-fired power station. '
