BIOMASS

Biomass is ‘fuel based on organic matter’.

  • Forestry/Woodland residue - wood, which comes from commercial harvesting or thinning forests. 70% of wood can be left on the forest floor following tree cutting.
  • Energy crops – crops grown specifically for energy generation. Willow is the most suitable in Wales.
  • Wood manufacturing waste - untreated wood waste from e.g, furniture factory , wood-packaging, construction and demolition.
The wood can be used in the form of logs or woodchip or processed into secondary bio-oil or biogas fuels.

In 2005 The Forestry Commission launched the Wood Energy Biomass Scheme with Objective 1 [EEC] money.

Manufacturers e.g. -Welsh Biofuels Ltd, Bridgend, use wood pellets from the Forestry Commission and other sources. Projects including heating a leisure Centre and swimming pool in Llandysul.
