Level of Support

  • 23% were very supportive of wind farms
  • 45% supported wind farms, 55% supported offshore wind farms,
  • 14% had concerns about onshore, 10% concerns about off shore
Regional differences

  • least supportive were people in SW Wales
  • most supportive in N Wales
Age group differences

  • students were more in favour of onshore wind farms than offshore
  • 45-54 age were the most supportive of wind energy
  • over 55 was the group most opposed to wind farms

1. Design a questionnaire to find out what people in your area think of wind farms. Remember the information is easier to analyse if you ask a series of closed questions – those with yes/no answers or with a graded answer e.g. 1 to 5. How will you decide on the sample of people to be asked?


2. Watch the BBC audio video of "UK's most powerful windfarm opens" This £50m wind farm is in mid Wales near Aberystwyth. The video gives different opinions on wind farms.


3. Research other recent news items on the web about wind farms in Wales. Choose one area in the news and in a table with two columns headed FOR and AGAINST summarise people’s opinions on one wind farm proposal in Wales.


4. What is your opinion on wind farms? Write a paragraph on the arguments for, a paragraph on the arguments against and then a final one giving your opinion, stating why you have come to this decision.
