Grand Cayman

Marketing

Tourism is extremely important to the economy of Grand Cayman, and the island is competing with many other destinations for business. It could be argued that all the other Caribbean islands are competitors, so it is important for the Cayman Islands Department of Tourism to keep informing potential visitors of the attractions of the island and the reasons for visiting.

Like in many destinations, visitor numbers do not continually rise, and there are many reasons why visitor numbers might vary over a period of time. In recent years Grand Cayman has faced two major challenges. Firstly, Hurricane Ivan, in 2004 caused major damage on the island. Secondly, the 'credit crunch' and economic downturn from 2007 onwards meant that there was a decrease in tourism. This has also led to a decrease in the number of cruise ship visits to the island.
