Read the two pieces of text by clicking on the images then discuss how we evaluate such claims.

Hints: Is the claim “God wants me to do it” purely subjective because we can’t test for its truth or falsity? Is this different from the divine command claim that God has spoken in and through the Bible? If God was telling George W. Bush to shoot someone, would we think he was crazy to obey that apparent command from God?

Suppose, as the terrorist example suggests, God is apparently telling someone to hijack an aeroplane and kill innocent people. Would we say this was misguided and evil? If so, what does this suggest about the source of moral goodness?

"I feel like God wants me to run for President, I can’t explain it, but I sense my country is going to need me . . . I know it won’t be easy on me or my family, but God wants me to do it."

- President George W. Bush

"You’re doing a job which is loved by God, and you will end your day in heaven"
