Between November 2012 and July 2013 there was an outbreak of the Measles disease in England and Wales. There were a total of 1455 notifications of the disease, 88 people suffered so badly they were hospitalised and one man died. As well as the human cost the monetary cost of treating the sick and controlling the epidemic exceeded £470,000.
Measles is a viral illness which can have serious complications associated with it such as lung and brain infections which could cause life changing damage or even death but there has been a vaccine available for the disease since 1968.
