In addition to creating a greater emotional response, photographs are used to capture a reader’s attention to an article. Research tells us that people don’t read newspapers and magazines in the same way they do books; they look at them, scanning headlines and photographs to determine which are worth committing their time to. Research also tells us that readers are drawn to larger photos over smaller ones, and colour images over black and white versions.

Why then did The Times use only this one small image?
