Routines are events that are completed on a regular basis and may have a series of steps e.g. tidying up, washing hands, snacks.

Routines have an important role in supporting children and young people’s health, well-being and development.

Routines give children and young people a sense of security and stability and help them feel safe and secure in their environment. They allow children and young people to focus on activities without fear of the unknown which promotes learning and development. By being sure of routines, children and young people know what is expected of them which may lead to a reduction in anxiety, stress and behaviour problems. Changed or disrupted routines may cause insecurity or a change in behaviour.

Routines support independence as children and young people become aware of what is happening at certain times of the day and develop skills e.g. dressing, helping with snacks. Routines such as toothbrushing, handwashing and hair care promote positive health and good hygiene.

Because children and young people become secure and confident by following routines they are then able to manage changes and take on new challenges.

Drwy fod yn sicr o arferion, bydd plant a phobl ifanc yn gwybod beth y disgwylir iddynt ei wneud, a all arwain at leihau pryder, straen a phroblemau ymddygiad. Gall newid arferion neu darfu arnynt achosi ansicrwydd neu newid mewn ymddygiad.

Mae arferion yn cefnogi annibyniaeth wrth i blant a phobl ifanc ddod yn ymwybodol o'r hyn sy'n digwydd ar adegau penodol o'r dydd a meithrin sgiliau, e.e. gwisgo, helpu gyda byrbrydau. Mae arferion fel brwsio dannedd, golchi dwylo a gofalu am y gwallt yn hybu iechyd cadarnhaol a hylendid da.

Am fod plant a phobl ifanc yn magu ymdeimlad o sicrwydd a hyder drwy ddilyn arferion, byddant wedyn yn gallu rheoli newidiadau ac wynebu heriau newydd.
