Relationship-centred working

A large part of the childcare worker's work involves building positive relationships with children and their families/carers, carers and professionals. This means close cooperation with people to share information and provide services that meet the needs of children and their parents/carers.

Building positive relationships with children and young people

Positive relationships with children and young people are important because children will separate from their parents/carers more easily if they feel comfortable with the adults at the setting. Children will be more likely to behave in a positive way if they have positive relationships in the setting, and it will be easier for childcare workers to respond to children because they will know their needs.

Building positive relationships with families/carers and carers

In order to provide positive care and education to children, it's important to understand that the families/carers are the experts when it comes to their child, so childcare workers should work with them to obtain the best results for children. Parents/carers or carers need to feel that childcare workers respect them. Childcare workers can show that they respect parents/carers by listening to their opinions and feelings, and being sensitive to their needs. It's important that parents/carers feel they can trust childcare workers. Childcare workers can build trust by being reliable and consistent when working with parents/carers, and being open and honest.

Building positive relationships with professionals

Settings need to cooperate with services, agencies and professionals to meet the needs of children and young people. All services, agencies or professionals have their own roles and responsibilities, but by cooperating they will share and receive different information about the child or young person meaning that children and their parents/carers need not attend a number of different appointments, and repeat their story many times.

Professional boundaries

When building and developing relationships, it's important that childcare workers adhere to professional boundaries. Clear professional boundaries allow safe connections between childcare workers and children or young people, parents/carers and professionals. This means that childcare workers need to consider their relationships with all people with whom they interact, and have a clear understanding of the responsibilities and requirements of their role. Childcare workers need to be friendly with parents/carers, but not be their friends. This helps childcare workers to concentrate on their responsibilities to the family/carers and supports the provision of a fair and effective service to all. An example of unclear professional boundaries is when the childcare worker and family/carers know each other personally outside the setting.

Mae rhan fawr o waith yr gweithiwr gofal plant yn golygu adeiladu perthnasau positif gyda phlant a’u teuluoedd/gofalwyr, gofalwyr a gweithwyr proffesiynol. Mae hyn yn golygu cyd-weithio’n agos gyda phobl er mwyn rhannu gwybodaeth a darparu gwasanaethau sy’n cwrdd ag anghenion plant a’u rhieni/gofalwyr neu ofalwyr.

Meithrin perthnasau cadarnhaol gyda phlant a phobl ifanc

Mae perthnasau positif gyda phlant a phobl ifanc yn bwysig oherwydd bydd plant yn gwahanu oddi wrth eu rhieni/gofalwyr yn haws os byddant yn teimlo’n gyfforddus gyda’r oedolion yn y lleoliad. Bydd plant yn fwy tebygol o ymddwyn mewn ffordd bositif os oes ganddynt berthnasau positif yn y lleoliad, a bydd yn haws i gweithwyr gofal plant ymateb i blant oherwydd byddant yn adnabod eu hanghenion.

Meithrin perthnasau cadarnhaol gyda theuluoedd/gofalwyr

Er mwyn darparu gofal ac addysg bositif i blant mae'n bwysig deall mai teuluoedd/gofalwyr yw'r arbenigwyr o ran eu plentyn, felly dylai gweithwyr gofal plant weithio gyda nhw er mwyn cael y canlyniadau gorau i blant. Mae angen i rieni/gofalwyr deimlo bod gweithwyr gofal plant yn eu parchu. Gall gweithwyr gofal plant ddangos eu bod yn parchu rhieni/gofalwyr drwy wrando ar eu barn a’u teimladau, a bod yn sensitif i’w anghenion. Mae’n bwysig bod rhieni/gofalwyr yn teimlo y gallant ymddiried mewn gweithwyr gofal plant . Gall gweithwyr gofal plant adeiladu ymddiriedaeth drwy fod yn ddibynadwy a chyson wrth weithio gyda rhieni/gofalwyr, a bod yn agored a gonest.

Meithrin perthnasau cadarnhaol gyda gweithwyr proffesiynol

Mae angen i leoliadau gyd-weithio gyda gwasanaethau, asiantaethau a phobl broffesiynol er mwyn cwrdd ag anghenion plant a phobl ifanc. Mae gan yr holl wasanaeth, asiantaethau neu bobl broffesiynol rolau a chyfrifoldebau eu hunain, ond drwy gyd-weithio y byddant yn rhannu a derbyn gwybodaeth wahanol am y plentyn neu berson ifanc sy’n golygu nad oes angen i blant a’u rhieni/gofalwyr fynychu nifer o apwyntiadau gwahanol, ac ailadrodd eu stori sawl gwaith.

Ffiniau proffesiynol

Wrth adeiladu a meithrin perthnasoedd mae’n bwysig bod gweithwyr gofal plant yn cadw at ffiniau proffesiynol. Mae ffiniau proffesiynol clir yn caniatáu cysylltiadau diogel rhwng gweithwyr gofal plant a phlant neu bobl ifanc, rhieni/gofalwyr a gweithwyr proffesiynol. Mae hyn yn golygu bod angen i gweithwyr gofal plant ystyried eu perthnasoedd gyda’r holl bobl y maent yn rhyngweithio gyda nhw, a chael dealltwriaeth glir o gyfrifoldebau a gofynion eu rôl. Mae angen i gweithwyr gofal plant fod yn gyfeillgar gyda rhieni/gofalwyr, ond nid yn ffrindiau gyda nhw. Mae hyn yn helpu gweithwyr gofal plant i ganolbwyntio ar eu cyfrifoldebau i'r teulu/gofalwyr ac yn gymorth i ddarparu gwasanaeth teg ac effeithiol i bawb. Enghraifft o ffiniau proffesiynol aneglur yw pan fydd yr gweithiwr gofal plant a'r teulu/gofalwyr yn adnabod ei gilydd mewn ffordd bersonol tu allan i’r lleoliad.

        • sharing information about individuals
        • the misuse of an individual's money or property
        • failure to provide care and support to an individual, or refusal to do so, for example, due to negative feelings towards the individual

        • derbyn rhoddion yn gyfnewid am wasanaeth mwy ffafriol
        • rhannu gwybodaeth am unigolion
        • camddefnyddio arian neu eiddo unigolyn

        • ceisio gwthio eich credoau crefyddol, moesol neu wleidyddol eich hun ar unigolyn
        • methu â hyrwyddo parch nac urddas.
