Children have to cope with many changes during their lives. The changes can be related to moving from one institution to another or a change of carer. The change can affect a child's lifestyle for example if there is mourning or the need to accept a new brother or sister. Whatever the change, it's essential that the child feels safe.
Changes and transitions may include:
The effect of these changes can be:
The changes encountered by children and young people can be positive or negative and this often depends on the support offered by the family/carers, friends and childcare workers/educators in children and young people's settings.
A move to any new institution will cause concern for the child/young person. The childcare worker needs to understand the child's concerns and deal with them in order to help the child settle. The child might worry about a number of factors such as:
Children can experience changes such as having a new brother or sister. A child will have created a strong attachment with their mother and due to the new baby, the mother will have to give most of her attention to the baby who is completely dependent on her.
British psychoanalyst John Bowlby has studied children's emotional and social development, and he defined the attachment theory. The attachment theory states that a baby needs to form one special primary attachment. Bowlby believed that a baby needs to develop this attachment by the end of the first year, and if the child was separated from this person for long periods during the first four years, the child would suffer psychological harm. This is why young children find it hard to cope with transitions, but with time they become accustomed and come to understand that they will return to their primary carer.
Should the child have to change carer following serious incidents such as the death of a family/carers member or abuse the child would not return to the family/carers; making the transition a negative one. Bowlby showed that meeting the child's physical and care needs alone was not enough for healthy development. Bowlby claimed that the child also required constant support from the primary carer.
Children need support, stability and someone to comfort them and help them to cope with these changes. This will determine if the change/transition will be positive or negative. Changes allow children to develop strategies to be able to control their behaviour and emotions.
Children can better cope with changes if adults:
Mae plant yn gorfod ymdopi â llawer o newidiadau yn ystod eu bywyd. Gall y newidiadau ymwneud â symud o un sefydliad i un arall neu newid gofalwr. Gall y newid effeithio ar ffordd plentyn o fyw, er enghraifft os bu galar neu’r angen i dderbyn brawd neu chwaer newydd. Beth bynnag yw'r newid, mae'n hanfodol bod y plentyn yn teimlo'n ddiogel.
Gall newidiadau a thrawsnewidiadau gynnwys:
Gall effaith y newidiadau yma fod yn:
Gall y newidiadau y daw plant a phobl ifanc ar eu traws fod yn gadarnhaol neu’n negyddol ac mae hyn yn aml yn dibynnu ar y gefnogaeth a gynigir gan y teulu/gofalwyr, ffrindiau ac gweithwyr gofal plant/addysgwyr o fewn lleoliadau plant a phobl ifanc.
Bydd symud i unrhyw sefydliad newydd yn peri pryder i'r plentyn/person ifanc. Mae angen i'r gweithiwr gofal plant ddeall pryderon y plentyn ac ymdrin â'r pryderon er mwyn helpu'r plentyn i setlo. Efallai y bydd y plentyn yn poeni am nifer o ffactorau megis:
Yn yr un modd os yw plentyn yn profi newidiadau megis cael brawd neu chwaer newydd. Mae’r plentyn wedi creu ymlyniad cryf gyda’i fam ac yn sgil y baban newydd mae ei fam yn gorfod rhoi ei sylw mwyaf i’r baban gan ei fod yn hollol ddibynnol arni.
Mae'r seicdreiddiwr Prydeinig, John Bowlby, wedi astudio datblygiad emosiynol a chymdeithasol plant, ac ef sy'n gyfrifol am ddiffinio'r theori ymlyniad. Yn ôl y theori ymlyniad mae angen i fabi ffurfio un prif ymlyniad arbennig. Credai Bowlby fod angen i fabi ddatblygu'r ymlyniad hwn erbyn diwedd y flwyddyn gyntaf, a phe bai'r plentyn yn cael ei wahanu oddi wrth y person hwn am gyfnodau maith yn ystod y pedair blynedd gyntaf, byddai'n dioddef niwed seicolegol. Dyma’r rheswm pam mae plant ifanc yn gweld hi’n anodd ymdopi â thrawsnewidiadau. Ond gydag amser maent yn cyfarwyddo gan eu bod yn dod i ddeall y byddant yn dychwelyd at eu prif ofalwr.
Pe bai’r plentyn yn gorfod newid gofalwr yn sgil digwyddiadau difrifol megis marwolaeth aelod o’r teulu/gofalwyr neu gamdriniaeth ni fyddai’r plentyn yn dychwelyd at y teulu/gofalwyr; sydd yn gwneud y trawsnewid yn un negyddol. Dangosodd Bowlby nad oedd diwallu anghenion corfforol ac anghenion gofal y plentyn yn unig yn ddigon ar gyfer ei ddatblygiad iach. Honnai Bowlby fod y plentyn hefyd angen cefnogaeth gyson y prif ofalwr.
Mae plant angen cefnogaeth, sefydlogrwydd a rhywun i’w cysuro a'u helpu i ymdopi â'r newidiadau hyn. Bydd hyn yn pennu a fydd y newid/ trawsnewid yn gadarnhaol neu’n negyddol. Mae newidiadau yn caniatáu i blant ddatblygu strategaethau i fedru rheoli eu hymddygiad a’u hemosiynau.
Gall blant ymdopi â newidiadau yn well os bydd oedolion yn:

Children and young people need sensitive support to cope with situations that mean change and transitions for them. Parents/carers will need support as well.
To ensure positive results the support must include the children, young people, parents/carers and staff within settings.
The following is fundamental to supporting children through changes:
Read about the process of starting school, prepare the child, pay a visit to the school, invite a child starting school at the same time over to the house, encourage the child to choose a new bag and pencil case, include the child in any preparations, encourage the child to ask questions, listen to the child's concerns, make the child feel they will belong to the setting, a hook, shelf, drawer or basket with the child's name on, putting photos of the children on the walls.
Talk to the child about the person, get the child to sum up memories, discuss emotions, look at photos, comfort the child by saying it's okay to cry, role play, children will sometimes use painting and drawing as ways of expressing their feelings following mourning, loss or separation.
Talk to the child, listen to the child, don't encourage the child to favour one parent/carer, behave reasonably when discussing plans for the child, include the child in decisions, give the child choices, be flexible, explain that the separation isn't the child's fault, keep to regular routines as familiarity will make the child feel secure.
This will help the child to develop confidently to be able to deal with different problems and challenges in the best possible way.
Mae plant a phobl ifanc angen cefnogaeth sensitif i ymdopi â sefyllfaoedd sy’n golygu newid a thrawsnewid iddynt. Bydd rhieni/gofalwyr angen cefnogaeth hefyd.
Er mwyn sicrhau canlyniadau positif mae’n rhaid i’r gefnogaeth gynnwys y plant, pobl ifanc, rhieni/gofalwyr a staff o fewn lleoliadau.
Dyma sy’n sylfaenol o ran cefnogi plant trwy newidiadau:
darllen am y broses o ddechrau ysgol, paratoi’r plentyn, gwneud ymweliad â’r ysgol, gwahodd plentyn sy’n dechrau’r ysgol ar yr un pryd draw i’r tŷ, annog y plentyn i ddewis bag a chas bensiliau newydd, cynnwys y plentyn mewn unrhyw baratoadau, annog y plentyn i ofyn cwestiynau, gwrando ar bryderon y plentyn, gwneud i’r plentyn deimlo y bydd yn perthyn i’r lleoliad, bachyn, silff, drôr neu fasged gydag enw'r plentyn arni, rhoi lluniau o'r plant ar y waliau.
siarad â’r plentyn am y person, cael y plentyn i grynhoi atgofion, trafod emosiynau, edrych ar luniau, cysuro’r plentyn wrth ddweud ei fod yn iawn i grio, chwarae rôl, bydd plant weithiau’n defnyddio peintio a thynnu lluniau fel ffyrdd o fynegi eu teimladau yn dilyn galar, colled neu wahanu.
siarad â’r plentyn, gwrando ar y plentyn, peidio annog y plentyn i ffafrio un rhiant/gofalwr, ymddwyn yn rhesymol wrth drafod cynlluniau am y plentyn, cynnwys y plentyn mewn penderfyniadau, rhoi dewisiadau i’r plentyn, bod yn hyblyg, esbonio nad bai'r plentyn yw’r rheswm dros y gwahanu, cadw at drefniadau rheolaidd gan fod pethau cyfarwydd yn rhoi sicrwydd i'r plentyn.
Bydd hyn yn gymorth i’r plentyn ddatblygu’n hyderus er mwyn gallu ymdrin â gwahanol broblemau a heriau yn y ffordd gorau posib.
Put the steps that should be taken as the child settles at a new setting in the correct order
Trefnwch yn ôl y camau y dylir eu dilyn wrth i’r plentyn setlo mewn lleoliad newydd
