Y ddeddfwriaeth berthnasol, genedlaethol, polisïau ac arweiniad sy'n ategu ffyrdd o ofalu am glwyfau nad ydynt yn rhai cymhleth

Prevention of health care acquired infection is essential when carrying out any wound care procedure and adherence to national policy will assist in achieving this outcome.

Aseptic Non-Touch Technique (ANTT) is a core skill to be used by any health care professional, allied health care professional or health care support worker when undertaking any aspect of wound care to reduce and prevent health care associated infection. ANTT is an international campaign to promote the six essential elements of aseptic technique (http://antt.org/ANTT_Site/ANTT-Approach.html) which are:

  • Risk assessment – Ensure the correct aseptic technique is selected that is appropriate for the environment and the procedure to be undertaken.
  • Manage the environment – Avoid or remove any potential contamination risks prior to dressing change.
  • Decontamination and protect - The WHO 5 steps of hand hygiene should be used for hand cleansing. Personal protective equipment (PPE) must be worn throughout the procedure (gloves and aprons). Disinfection and cleaning of equipment should be according to local policy.
  • Use aseptic fields - As provided within dressing packs used for the procedure.
  • Use non-touch techniques - Key parts must only come into contact with other key parts and key sites.
  • Prevent cross infection - Equipment should be disposed of safely and according to local waste disposal policy. Decontamination and hand washing should be undertaken after each dressing procedure.

Staff undertaking dressing changes should complete the online mandatory training for aseptic non-touch technique.

Do I have the knowledge and competence to undertake this task?

Has this wound been assessed by a health care professional?

Do I need a health care professional to reassess this wound?

In 2013, Welsh Government agreed the need for a review of the Doing Well, Doing Better: Standards for Health Services in Wales (2010) and the Fundamentals of Care Standards (2003), which provided an opportunity to align standards underpinning the planning and provision of healthcare services. These new Health and Care Standards are designed to be implemented in all health care organisations, settings and locations, and by all teams and services. Every person in Wales who uses health services or supports others to do so, whether in hospital, primary care, their community or in their own home has the right to receive excellent care as well as advice and support to maintain their health. All health services in Wales need to demonstrate that they are doing the right thing, in the right way, in the right place, at the right time and with the right staff. The Health and Care Standards provide the framework to help teams and services demonstrate this.

Mae angen i'r holl wasanaethau iechyd yng Nghymru ddangos eu bod yn gwneud y peth cywir, yn y ffordd gywir, yn y lle cywir, ac yr adeg gywir a gyda'r staff cywir. Mae'r Safonau Iechyd a Gofal yn darparu'r fframwaith i helpu timoedd a gwasanaethau i ddangos hyn.
