Development is a lifelong process and intellectual, physical and emotional growth are interdependent in many ways.

Once a child has confidently developed movement (physical) they will be able to explore their environment, learning from their experiences (intellectual). This in turn will contribute to building confidence in expressing feelings and coping with different tasks (emotional).

When learning to walk independently the child will have a sense of self-accomplishment which impacts upon their emotional development. The development of motor skills, generally, can have a significant impact on the development of the child's language and intellectual development.

Participation in physical play also has a positive link to the intellectual and emotional development of the child.

Intellectual Development / Growth Physical Development / Growth Emotional Development / Growth
Spatial awareness Developing fine motor skills Promoting self-esteem and self-confidence
Developing the concept of height Developing gross motor skills Giving children a sense of freedom
Developing the concept of speed Developing balance skills Releasing tensions
Developing environmental awareness Developing coordination skills Giving children a taste of adventure
Developing new vocabulary Feeling of achievement
Encouraging communication Managing feelings

These areas of development can be supported by providing children with varied experiences and activities in line with their age and stage of development. When observing children's ability, it is possible to discover which activities and resources are suitable and beneficial for each of them individually. It is essential that the childcare worker regularly offers encouragement and praise in order to promote learning.
