Health and Social Care

Physical activities support children's health, well-being and development, and link to all areas of development. Physical fitness is essential to children's health. Children who are physically active will have stronger muscles and bones and are less likely to be overweight than children who are not active. Children who engage in sufficient physical exercise reduce the risk of developing a number of diseases that have become more common in children over the last few years, such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure and diabetes.

Many children enjoy being active but it is also important that there are periods of relaxation, rest and quiet time. Sleep is essential for the body to be able to repair cells, rest muscles and grow. Lack of sleep may affect our mood, our memory and our concentration. It is important that childcare childcare workers realise if a child is tired and in need of sleep.

The signs below show that a child is tired:

  • rubbing their eyes
  • playing with their hair
  • sucking their thumb
  • needing a comforter
  • being angry
  • crying
  • refusing to cooperate
  • showing no interest in what is happening around them.

Older children may not need sleep, but it is important that they have periods of rest during the day. The childcare worker will need to arrange quiet activities such as reading a story or doing a jigsaw during these rest periods.

Mae gweithgareddau corfforol yn cefnogi iechyd, llesiant a datblygiad plant, ac yn cysylltu â phob ardal o ddatblygiad. Mae ffitrwydd corfforol yn hanfodol i iechyd plant. Bydd gan blant sy'n actif yn gorfforol gyhyrau ac esgyrn cryfach ac maent yn llai tebygol o fod dros bwysau na phlant nad ydynt yn actif. Mae plant sy'n cael digon o ymarfer corff yn lleihau'r risg o ddatblygu nifer o glefydau sydd wedi dod yn fwy cyffredin mewn plant yn ystod y blynyddoedd diwethaf, megis colesterol uchel, pwysedd gwaed uchel a diabetes.

Mae llawer o blant yn hoffi bod yn actif ond mae hefyd yn bwysig fod yna gyfnodau o ymlacio, gorffwys a thawelwch. Mae cwsg yn hanfodol er mwyn i'r corff allu atgyweirio celloedd, gorffwys cyhyrau a thyfu. Gall diffyg cwsg effeithio ar ein hwyliau, ein cof a'n gallu i ganolbwyntio. Mae'n bwysig bod gweithwyr gofal plant gofal plant yn sylweddoli os yw plentyn wedi blino ac angen cwsg.

Bydd yr arwyddion isod yn dangos bod plentyn wedi blino:

  • rhwbio'r llygaid
  • chwarae gyda'i wallt
  • sugno'i fawd
  • angen gwrthrych cysur
  • bod yn flin
  • crio
  • gwrthod cydweithredu
  • dangos dim diddordeb yn yr hyn sy'n digwydd o'i amgylch.

Efallai na fydd ar blant hŷn angen cwsg, ond mae'n bwysig eu bod yn cael cyfnodau o orffwys yn ystod y dydd. Bydd angen i'r gweithiwr gofal plant drefnu gweithgareddau tawel fel darllen stori neu wneud jig-so yn ystod y cyfnodau gorffwys hyn.
