In settings where childcare workers are in charge of the administration of medication and undertaking basic health procedures, it is important that they understand how to complete these tasks appropriately and understand the importance of keeping accurate records.

All settings will have policies and procedures setting out clear guidance for storing and administering medication, and childcare workers need to be mindful of what they are required to do. These policies and procedures are affected by legislation and national guidance.

Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 (COSHH)

Settings must follow Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 (COSHH) guidance for storing medications. Medications must be kept out of the reach of children, either locked away or in a secure refrigerator. Inhalers do not need to be locked away, so that children can access them when required. Medications need to be stored in bottles with child-proof lids.

National Minimum Standards for Regulated Childcare for children up to the age of 12 years

Standard 11 sets out guidance to ensure that children are protected by the setting's medication policies and procedures and receive the medication they need. Settings need to ensure they have written consent from the parent/carer before administering medication to a child, with understanding of the medication's possible side-effects. The medication needs to be stored in its original container, labelled clearly with the child's name. Settings need to keep a written record of all medication administered to children, including details of the dose and the time the medication was administered. parents/carers need to sign the record. A record must be kept of all children taking medication regularly, for example children with asthma, and the medication they take, such as inhalers. The record should be regularly updated.

Roles and responsibilities of childcare workers during the administration of medication:

  • reading the label on the medication to ensure it is correct, noting the dose and time to be administered
  • not administering one child's medication to another
  • reading the instructions
  • noting the expiry date on the medicine
  • shaking the bottle if required
  • the measuring device provided with the medicine must be used – not all teaspoons are equivalent to 5ml
  • pouring with the label up, to keep from spilling medicine onto the label
  • ensuring that the child takes a full dose
  • medicine should not be added to drinks
  • ensuring the medication is stored correctly
  • noting the date and time
  • sterilising the syringe for babies
  • medicine should never be poured from one bottle into another.

childcare workers must follow robust policies and procedures in order to minimise the risk of accidents during the administration of medication to children. A child could accidentally receive the wrong medication or receive too much or too little of it. The medication may also potentially be given to a child at the wrong time. In order to avoid mistakes, two members of staff should be present when administering medicine to children. In doing so, childcare workers can also protect themselves from allegations of improper conduct or abuse if required.

Mewn lleoliadau lle mae gweithwyr gofal plant yn gyfrifol am roi meddyginiaeth a chwblhau gweithdrefnau iechyd sylfaenol, mae’n bwysig eu bod yn deall sut i gwblhau’r tasgau hyn yn briodol ac yn deall pwysigrwydd cadw cofnodion cywir.

Bydd gan bob lleoliad bolisïau a gweithdrefnau sy’n gosod canllawiau clir ar gyfer storio a rhoi meddyginiaeth, ac mae angen i gweithwyr gofal plant fod yn ymwybodol o’r hyn y mae gofyn iddynt ei wneud. Mae’r polisïau a gweithdrefnau hyn yn cael eu heffeithio gan ddeddfwriaeth a chanllawiau cenedlaethol.

Rheoliadau Rheoli Sylweddau sy’n Peryglu Iechyd 2002 (COSHH)

Mae’n rhaid i leoliadau ddilyn canllawiau Rheoliadau Rheoli Sylweddau sy’n Peryglu Iechyd 2002 (COSHH) wrth storio meddyginiaethau. Rhaid cadw meddyginiaethau allan o gyrraedd plant, un ai dan glo, neu mewn oergell ddiogel. Nid oes angen cadw anadlyddion dan glo er mwyn i blant gael mynediad atynt pan fydd angen. Mae angen storio meddyginiaethau mewn poteli gyda chaead ni all blant eu hagor (child-proof lids).

Safonau Gofynnol Cenedlaethol ar gyfer Gofal Plant a Reoleiddir i blant hyd at 12 oed

Mae Safon 11 yn gosod canllawiau er mwyn sicrhau bod plant yn cael eu diogelu gan bolisïau a gweithdrefnau'r lleoliad am feddyginiaeth ac yn derbyn y feddyginiaeth sydd ei hangen arnynt. Mae angen i leoliadau sicrhau eu bod wedi derbyn caniatâd ysgrifenedig y rhiant/gofalwr cyn rhoi meddyginiaeth i blentyn, gyda dealltwriaeth o sgileffeithiau y feddyginiaeth. Mae angen storio’r feddyginiaeth yn y cynhwysydd gwreiddiol, wedi’i labelu’n glir gydag enw’r plentyn. Mae angen i leoliadau gadw cofnod ysgrifenedig o bob meddyginiaeth a roddir i blant, gan gynnwys manylion am y dos a’r amser rhoddwyd y feddyginiaeth. Mae angen i rieni lofnodi’r cofnod. Mae angen cadw cofnod o bob plentyn sy’n cymryd meddyginiaeth yn rheolaidd, er enghraifft plant ag asthma, a’r feddyginiaeth y maent yn eu cymryd, megis anadlyddion ‘inhalers’. Dylid diweddaru’r cofnod yn rheolaidd.

Rolau a chyfrifoldebau gweithwyr gofal plant wrth roi meddyginiaeth

  • darllen y label ar y feddyginiaeth i sicrhau ei fod yn gywir gan nodi’r dos ac amser i’w roi
  • peidio rhoi meddyginiaeth un plentyn i blentyn arall
  • darllen y cyfarwyddiadau
  • nodi’r dyddiad terfyn ar y moddion
  • ysgwyd y botel os oes angen
  • rhaid defnyddio’r mesurydd a roddwyd gyda’r moddion – nid yw pob llwy de yn cyfateb i 5ml
  • arllwys gyda’r label i fyny, i arbed colli moddion ar y label
  • sicrhau fod y plentyn yn cymryd y dos llawn
  • ni ddylid ychwanegu moddion at ddiodydd
  • sicrhau bod y feddyginiaeth yn cael ei storio yn gywir
  • cofnodi’r dyddiad a’r amser
  • diheintio chwistrelli ar gyfer babanod,
  • ni ddylid byth arllwys moddion o un botel i’r llall.

Mae’n rhaid i gweithwyr gofal plant ddilyn polisïau a gweithdrefnau cadarn er mwyn lleihau’r risg o ddamweiniau wrth roi meddyginiaeth i blant. Gallai plentyn dderbyn y feddygyniaeth anghywir yn ddamweiniol, neu dderbyn gormod neu rhy ychydig ohono. Mae’n bosib hefyd i’r feddygyniaeth gael ei roi i blentyn ar yr adeg anghywir. Er mwyn osgoi camgymeriadau dylid cael dau aelod o staff yn bresennol wrth gynnig meddygyniaeth i blant. Trwy wneud hyn gall gweithwyr gofal plant hefyd amddiffyn eu hunain rhag cyhuddiadau o ymddygiad amhriodol neu gamdriniaeth os bydd angen.
