Biodiversity action plans have been developed to conserve species since the 1992 Rio Earth Summit.
In Wales there has been a focus on 12 habitats and 54 species.
‘These plans are now turning into action on a local as well as a national level
- getting to grips with conserving species like the red squirrel, water vole, otter, marsh fritillary butterfly, lapwing, skylark, natterjack toad and the medicinal leech.
Threatened habitats getting special attention include upland oakwoods, lowland heaths, fens and reedbeds, and saline lagoons.’ [CCW]
There are local Biodiversity Action Plans run by local authorities and voluntary groups.
