Climate
Like all areas of the UK, North Wales suffers from the unpredictability of its climate. This is one of the main reasons why people started to take package holidays from the 1970’s onwards when they became available. Many tourists found that they could fly to a Mediterranean resort for little more than what it would cost to stay in a hotel in a traditional seaside resort.
However, with good weather the scenery of the mountains and coast of North Wales can be beautiful and appeals to many tourists.
As more people visit North Wales to take part in adventure activities, the climate becomes less of a problem. These tourists are more prepared for bad weather and can enjoy the activities when it would be too cold or wet to sit on a beach. The climate varies a great deal throughout North Wales.
Llandudno has a mild temperate climate and no extremes of temperature. Rainfall is quite high year round. While the resort sits on the northwest coast of Wales, it is protected from the brunt of the cool, wet weather carried by the southwest prevailing winds that come off the Atlantic by The Ormes, two rocky headlands.
In Snowdonia the weather can change between one valley and the next. The prevailing winds in Snowdonia come from the south west. This means that they are warm and moist. When air reaches mountainous regions it has to rise up. As it rises it cools and any water vapour condenses to form clouds. The result is heavy rainfall over the mountains - up to 4343mm on the summit of Snowdon.
