Facilities

Malta relies heavily on tourism and since most of the tourists to the islands arrive by air, most stay in hotels rather than on camp sites and in caravan parks. In fact, there is only one official camp site on Malta!

Malta has just over 40,000 bed spaces for tourists, with 33,000 of these in hotels. The remaining 7,000 are in hostels, guesthouses and holiday complexes.

The 2007 figures for accommodation in Malta hotels shows that there were:

One of the issues of tourism in Malta is that because tourism developed quickly a lot of poor quality hotels were built along the coast. These do not look very attractive today.

Work is being undertaken to replace the hotels built during the 1970’s with more modern facilities. Apartments and self-catering accommodation is replacing the older-style hotels favoured by package holidaymakers.

The Fortina Spa Resort is an example of a modern ‘five star’ facility in the resort of Sliema, a short distance from Valetta. The Fortina offers a high standard of comfort and wide range of facilities.

A wide variety of restaurants offering local food are available as well as international ‘fast food’ chains.

Tourist information is available from the tourist office in Valetta, and there are ‘brown signs’ providing information and directions around the island.
