Malta is competing with all the other destinations within the Mediterranean area and has to undertake marketing activities to ensure that tourists continue to arrive in large numbers.

Malta is trying to attract new markets and not rely on the package holidaymakers who came in the past. Also, now that Malta is part of the European Union and has the Euro as its currency, Malta can market itself more effectively in nearby countries such as Italy and Spain.

The website of Malta Tourism (www.visitmalta.com) has ‘Welcome to the Heart of the Mediterranean’ as its slogan. This suggests that Malta is in the middle of the Mediterranean and is easy to get to, which is very true!

The tourism organisations in Malta also have links to English football clubs. Visit Malta is the shirt sponsor of Sheffield United, who play in the Championship. Air Malta is an official partner of Portsmouth Football Club, who play in the Premiership. Both these sponsorship deals provide exposure for Malta when games are televised in the UK and in other countries.

Visit Malta undertakes a range of marketing activities to groups and individuals. These activities include:

• promoting the benefits of Malta to cruise operators, to ensure that the cruise itineraries include Malta

• promoting Malta to companies who may wish to hold conferences in Malta at one of the new conference centres

• providing information about what’s happening in Malta through the website
